The Sarbat Khalsa was called in response to a series baeadbi (desecrations) of the Guru Granth Sahib last summer when ripped angs (pages) of the living Guru of the Sikhs were found in the streets of Punjab.
Sikhs accused the Punjab government of complacency in finding the culprits and even of conspiring to commit the heresy as a way of distracting its citizens from various very-long-term grievances that had culminated into numerous protests last year throughout the state.
Sikhs held the Prakash Badal administration responsible for criminal loan-sharking and land-grabbing practices against farmers, unconstitutionally imprisoning political dissidents beyond their prison terms, sanctioning police brutality against peaceful protesters, and interfering in Sikh religious affairs by controlling the SGPC and the jathedaars of the takhats.
The following is an English transcription of the proceedings of Sarbat Khalsa 2015. It contains general ideas of repetitive content, summaries of relevant content and paraphrases of significant content.
0 – Avtar Singh, Karimpuri, Bahujan Samaj Party member and former member of the Raja Sabha (Indian Parliament): I further announced that if the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) and the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) want to turn India into a Hindu nation, then the BSP will sacrifice everything to prevent this country from becoming a Hindu raj. That is what (BSP national leader) Mayawati said. Today, it is very important to have that fight. For people of all religions, the downtrodden, the poor for whom the Guru said to raise them up to the status of the rulers. With the Guru Granth Sahib, they have an equal voice. Guru Gobind Singh showed a lot of respect for them. And (founder and chairman) Kanshi Ram of the BSP even said that he considers the Guru Granth Sahib as his party’s manifesto. And the BSP is with you in every battlefield, stands with you. When Guru Nanak said: “Babur came from Kabul with the marriage party of sin.” Today, the BSP will stand with the Sikh nation to throw out Badal’s marriage party of sin.
30 – MC: calling out names of supporters.
30 – Kavalpreet Singh, welcoming committee: (Saying irresponsible and false statements about the Gurus and Sikh history. MCs trying to stop him from speaking. The crowd booing him.) Continuing: Makkar said that only the Akal Takhat jathedar can call the Sarbat Khalsa, but the Punj Piaaray did not accept the jathedar. The Guru says that one Sikh is sangat and five Sikhs (Punj Piaaray) are the image of God. Those persons who will go from here to honor Badal, they should be chastised.
35 – MC: Announcements.
00 – representative of Ram Singh, Nanaksar (a Punjabi cult, there are no cults or sects in Sikhism): They will completely support the Sarbat Khalsa and its resolutions.
30 – MC: Calling out names of supporters.
30 – Buta Singh Raseekay, general secretary of the Shriomani Akali Dal Party: All the resolutions passed in the Jan. 26, 1986, Sarbat Khalsa were implemented. But after that, Punjab Chief Minister Barnala called another Sarbat Khalsa in February, in Anandpur Sahib, which was a failure. In 1987, the Barnala government was voted out. Today’s government may call another Sarbat Khalsa (with it did on Nov. 23, 2015), but the resolutions that will be passed by this Sarbat Khalsa will prevail, and the new jathedaars that will be announced will do their work and the Badal government will be given its funeral rites. The organizers who had courageously arranged this gathering, prompted by the baeadbi of Guru Granth Sahib under the watch of the Akal Takhat, should also be recognized. This gathering was courageously arranged by Gurdeep Singh Bathinda, Mohkam Singh, Simarjit Singh Mann, Dhian Singh Mund, Jaskaran Singh, Kahnsinghwaala, Satnam Singh Mannama, Baljeet Singh Daduwala, Amrik Singh Ajnala. They worked day and night and told us of Badal’s PTC and other channels that were spreading propaganda day and night that this is a gathering of traitors and dangerous people, but you proved that this is a gathering of the Panth (Sikh Nation). I congratulate those who have called the gathering of the Panth, the Sarbat Khalsa. This will show a new direction for the people of Punjab, and you will be the rulers here. The leader of SAD, Sukhbir Badal, cannot speak any longer at any gurdwara. The leader of the SGPC (Makkar) can no longer enter any gurdwara (stage). The jathedaar of the Akal Takhat, Gurbachan Singh, can no longer mingle with the sangat. To the new jathedaar and other (Sarbat Khalsa) leaders I say that this is not the end, this is the beginning. It is your responsibility to give direction to this gathering, to a direction that will lead us to a government by the people, and where religion will be discussed and poor people will be valued.
28 – MC: Introducing next speaker.
45 – Balwinder Singh Rode (from same village as Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale): This is the gathering of the Khalsa Panth, which will take steps to establish a government of the Khalsa.
56 – MC: Announcing names of supporters and introducing next speaker.
00 – Hari Singh, Ziraywaalay: Like Baba Deep Singh, the Sarbat Khalsa has drawn a line that defines who are with the Guru Granth Sahib and who are using Guru Granth Sahib. You have gathered here in honor of Guru Granth Sahib. Remember this: Those who have dishonored the Akal Takhat, those who have dishonored the principles and traditions of the Akal Takhat, those who have abandoned their Guru, they have no place to hide. They can’t show their faces in this world or in the next. Only if we all get together and unite can we maintain the Guru’s honor.
47 – MC: Announcing next speaker.
05 – Satnam Singh, All India Sikh Student Federation: Call out to honor Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Shaheed Amrik Singh.
59 – MC: They are not forgotten, they are still honored (on billboards and posters).
47 – Paramjeet Singh, Anandpur Sahib walay: I had been watching television and looking at social media, which says these people who are traitors of the Panth and are fugitives, they are the ones that have gathered here. All these people who do kirtan and paath, etc., you (media/Badal) call them traitors. Are you, who drink alcohol and dance in clubs all night, etc., the faithful? We need results, not slogans. To achieve those results I want to say that no one will hand you your kingdom on a platter. Guru Gobind Singh fought 14 battles. He defeated (Mughal Emperor) Aurangzeb’s forces. Guru Hargobind faught 4 battles not with rosaries but with arms. Guru Gobind Singh said be pious and truthful, do your prayers. Quotes Guru Gobind Singh… We will sacrifice ourselves…
20 – MC: Next speaker.
35 – Suba Singh, Satkar Saba: Singing – we will not desist from sacrificing ourselves.
40 – MC: Next speaker.
25 – Gurbhej Singh, USA: Don’t blame the jathedaars or Badals. I will tell you something…, Badal is the (stammering) guru and the jathedaars listen to whatever their guru (Badal) says. But you have the True Guru for whom you have gathered here and I thank you for being part of the Sarbat Khalsa.
