The US Army cannot subject its Sikh soldier to discriminatory testing

By Anju Kaur | March 07, 2016

A U.S. district court judge told Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter on March 3 that the Army cannot single out and subject Captain Simratpal Singh to any non-standard or discriminatory testing of his helmet and gas mask to determine whether to grant him a religious accommodation.

A decision on the temporary accommodation is due by March 31. But, in the lawsuit filed on Feb. 29, Simratpal Singh is asking for a permanent religious accommodation that would allow him to exercise his constitutionally mandated religious freedom to wear uncut hair and beard, and a turban, as mandated by the Sikh faith.
