Capt. Simratpal Singh is now the first Sikh to serve as a combat soldier in the U.S. Army, with a religious accommodation.

He received the long-term exemption on March 31, the Sikh Coalition said yesterday in a news release.

It allows him to serve on active duty with his articles of faith – turban, unshorn hair and beard.
