Bhai Surinder Singh of Sikh Gurdwara, DC, apologized to the sangat yesterday for taking part in an Amrit Sanchaar in which three of the five Banees that are attributed to the original ceremony by Guru Gobind Singh, in 1699, were replaced with three Banees from the Guru Granth Sahib.
The gurdwara management was not aware of his participation, he said.
The alteration caused an international commotion because it violated the Sikh Rehit Maryaada.
The altered Amrit Sanchaar took place on April 15 at the nearby Gurdwara Sikh Sangat of Virginia, where its gyani, Kuldeep Singh, organized the ceremony.
Twelve Washington-metro area gurdwaras signed a statement last week condemning the alterations.
